The following was written as a homework assignment in my Practical Ministry course, with an eye towards preaching someday in a wedding service.
This year I celebrated my Silver Wedding Anniversary. Marie and I were married in a big Episcopal Church in 1984, only 3 years after the fairytale wedding of Prince Charles and Lady Diana captivated the English-speaking world.
It was also only 5 years after the publication of a new Book of Common Prayer for the Episcopal Church in America. As lo…

I teased that there was more to say about my last days as a bachelor, and here it is.
My surgery was six weeks and 19 hours before my wedding. It was a surprise for everybody, which makes sense: One doesn't really PLAN for emergency cancer surgery. I called in "sick" Friday morning, the day of my surgery, and told the receptionist I was in the hospital. She asked if it was serious. What do you say to that?
Marie and I recuperated together, a matched pair of singletons (since her ovary had been…

I can hardly believe that a year ago, the strike was just starting. I was pondering the effect it had on my life and decided I needed to write it out.
One year ago I was in debt, had no money, and was late on pretty much all of my bills. It's funny, when the strike happened I was in disbelief. We found ourselves getting food from the food bank we volunteer at. I was making $150 a week strike pay, after the 4th week had passed, nothing until then!
It's very cool to look back on. The Lord provided…

This is going to be very strange. I was pondering about some of the legislation that is before the US Congress, and thinking about the proper Christian attitude. It occurred to me that the Bible might have something to say on the matter. I went to the
Chain Link Bible and followed the “alien” links. I discarded the passages that did not apply, (e.g. “strange woman” and “foreign nations”) and this is what I came up with.…

It's now been more than 5 months since my last blog entry, and while I haven't posted anything about the year I got engaged and married, I have been thinking about that quarter century (that phrase makes me feel
veryold. A lot of things have been happening in those 5 months, and I will share some of those. But for now I want to tell you about the first time I avoided death by disease.
Just to recap, my girlfriend and I got engaged on Tax Day, 1984. We had been friends for a year, and "ha…

In my humble opinion a true friend helps each other out without expecting something in return nor abuse their friendship by bumming all the time.
A true friend is someone that knows when to advise and when to just be quiet and listen.
A true friend just calls to check on you nor is offended when they are too busy with the lastest family crisises going on in their home.
If you have any more to add to this, please post.

Have you ever gone out of your way to make a good impression on someone? Or spent any amount of time worrying about what someone thought of you?
I've been having some trying times at work for the last several weeks and a couple of weeks ago I felt led to pray a prayer before work. "Lord, when people see me, please let them see Your love". I have prayed this prayer for the last few weeks both before and after work. In fact, I now find myself waking to this prayer, it has changed some, but the und…

Come check out the new podcast. It has a lot to do with money. What is strange after making the podcast, I [Christina] was talking to a friend that was telling me in one day she lost $ 14,000 and had such a spiral out of control experience that she was forced to seek help. Then on TLC it was talking to people who have wom due to lottery, scratch tickets and sweepstakes and the rise and fall of fortune. I would love to talk more about this since it seems to be a hot topic.
Plus listen for detail…

But God Remembered
I have heard it said that the first three signs of aging are memory loss, …. well, I cannot really remember the other two so we will move on. Memory is a funny thing. I can vividly remember certain aspects and events in my life and yet I cannot remember where I set down my car keys when I walked into the house. Oh yeah! I left them hanging in the door again! Maybe you have done this: Not too long ago I went to a grocery store to buy Milk. As I was making my way to the back of…

My middle daughter Gwen, who is 14 years old, loves the Barbie movies. I have been watching them with her, I have to admit that I have been enjoying myself immensely. The music is Broadway sounding. The voice over work is done by well know actors and actresses. The morals are told in very modern ways. They almost remind me of fun and modern morality plays.

We are in our final week of school, and it's been going by so quickly. Today and tomorrow is it, and then we're off for the summer. I am ready for a break...but I'm not completely done yet. I have to start rehearsals for my schools' summer musical, Grease (I'm in the pit orchestra), and then I have to go to drum major camp because I made drum major for next year, and then I get to conduct the fourth of July parade (marching backwards, no less), so I've still got a lot to do. I just got done with…

While at Wal-Mart one day. A young African man was checking my items and we got to talking. I had my youngest daughter with me, and commented on how helpful and well behaved she was. He ask about how old she. I told him that she had just turned 12 and that Ana, my daughter, went to a Christian school. He asked about if they taught Darwinism. I explained they taught both Creationism and Darwinism, and gave him other reason why she goes to a Christian school. He explain that in his country they be…

I grew up in the church. My mother was (and remains) a devout Lutheran. I remember her taking me to church when I was quite little. I sat patiently in the pew, not really sure what was going on. But I received sound instruction in Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, Bible Camp and Luther League. I sang in the youth choir and I was an acholyte. I never attained Eagle Scout, but I earned my
Pro Deo et Patria (God and Country) badge. Even when I was in high school, I'd stay out until 3 AM…
